Impacts of climate-smart crop varieties and livestock breeds on the food security of smallholder farmers in Kenya

Abstract This paper analyses the impact of climate-smart agriculture (CSA) technologies on household dietary diversity and food insufficiency as indicators nutrition security in Kenya. Using a combination Propensity Score Matching endogenous treatment effect approaches, we found that adoption stress-tolerant varieties several crops (such bean, pigeon pea, cowpea, maize sorghum) improved score by 40% reduced 75%. Adoption resilient livestock breeds (including Red Maasai sheep Galla goats) 38% while reducing 90%. We also crop were more effective improving outcomes among households with large landholdings educated younger to middle-age heads. Effects much stronger for young and/or older heads have low levels education. Given large, demonstrated benefits from use CSA technologies, policies programs aimed at their promotion should apply appropriate targeting ensure wider uptake maximum returns investment.
